Tips to Ensure A Successful Trip

Before You Fly...

Many airlines allow you to access your itinerary online to save you valuable time at the airport. Find out if you require any vaccinations before you travel. Plan ahead - pre-arrange transfers, hotel accommodation, and other elements of your journey with your travel agent. Make copies of your passport, traveller's cheques, credit cards, itinerary, and airline tickets. Carry one copy with you and leave one copy and your overseas contact details with a person you designate as your emergency contact. Bring with you the address and phone number of your country's embassy, High Commission or consulate for each country you plan to visit.

When travelling to the USA you must have the address and zip code for where you are staying to ensure you are able to fully complete the I-94W Immigration form when you land. New rules for entry to the USA came into force on 26 October 2004 and more information can be found on the US Embassy UK website.

Pack any regular medication in your hand luggage, and ensure you have an adequate supply for the duration of your trip (please note: needles cannot be carried in hand luggage unless medical documentation can be provided).

Make sure you check your home is secure before you go on holiday. Almost half of all burglaries happen when a flat or house is empty so read the Home Office tips at their website and plan ahead. There is a handy checklist of things to do before you leave as well as practical home security advice of things to check before you leave.

You should also be knowledgeable about your destination. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office web site contains useful information including specific country advice (official Foreign Office travel advice on over 200 countries), country specific Travellers' Tips, and links to travel advice of foreign governments. It's also wise to buy some books relating to your holiday area and better aquaint yourself with general information such as places of interest, what's on advice and general tips on laws and customs abroad. At The Airport
Heightened security measures have increased the time needed at the airport and the variety of security measures you may encounter. You will need to allow sufficient time to clear security screening and arrive at your departure gate on time. We suggest you arrive at the airport in plenty of time to catch your flight especially at peak times, such as school and national holidays. The following tips may help smooth the process:

Opening and closing times for check-in and boarding vary by airport so it is important to find out what your local airport times are in order to arrive there in plenty of time for your flight. You will need to allow extra time if you are travelling with young children, infants, or persons with disabilities. You can save time at the airport by using Self-Service Check-in kiosks or Online Check-in where available. Avoid packing your carry-on bags tightly so that it is easier for security personnel to check them. Travellers may bring one carry-on and one personal item (such as a handbag or briefcase) on most flights. Check your standard checked baggage allowance and ensure that you have included your name and contact details on tags outside and inside your baggage. Pay attention to what you're bringing with you. Note that you cannot carry sharp items in your carry-on bags. Certain items should not be carried on an aircraft because of the danger they represent. Many of these items are commonly used at work or home, but may become a hazard in flight due to changes in temperature and pressure. Check what are considered restricted baggage items

When travelling to and from North America, the Transportation Safety Administration recommends you do not lock your checked baggage, as security may need to open your luggage to complete security checks.

Ensure your personal information is accurate and complete. Be sure to have a valid passport and any required Visas. You may be asked to provide your passport and boarding card at subsequent points, such as at the gate or security checkpoints. For travel within the UK only, often you only need to carry photographic ID but we would always recommend taking your passport - it's the best form of photo ID there is!

Be prepared for security checkpoints. Only ticketed passengers are allowed beyond the security checkpoints, except for those with specific medical or parental needs. All electronic items, such as laptops and mobile phones, will be subjected to additional screening. Be sure to remove your laptop from its travel case so that both can be X-rayed separately . Keep your ticket, boarding pass, and ID within easy reach and wear shoes that can be taken off and put back on relatively easily. Limit the amount of jewellery or other metal objects that you wear, and remove all metal objects prior to passing through the metal detectors in order to facilitate the screening process.

Make the most of your time at the airport. Some airlines provide premium cabins where you can spend some time in one of the lounges, which usually offer you restorative environments to de-stress, snacks and drinks to keep your energy up, plus phones, faxes and email to stay in contact with business colleagues and loved ones.

Allow plenty of time to get to your gate, as most flights close 10 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

On board the aircraft
Try not to sit still for too long. When convenient, get up and move about the cabin and stretch your arms and legs every so often. Go for the light bite. Eat a light meal and drink plenty of water. Go easy on alcohol, coffee and tea. Help your body cope better when travelling to new time zones by taking every opportunity to sleep en route. Every little nap will help. And don't forget to remove your contact lenses before you sleep. cabin crew are always friendly and happy to assist so don't hesitate to ask your steward/stewardess for advice.

Returning home
Simply follow the same procedures as you did on your departure, and don't hesitate to ask airport or airline staff if you need any assistance.
